GENERAL STUDY ABROAD GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

As you’ll see, there are lots of scholarships that are tied to the specific location or region where you’re studying abroad. There is an equal number that can be used to fund your study abroad experience anywhere in the world.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Offered by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. Department of State, Benjamin A. Gilman scholarships are offered to help students on Federal Pell Grants study abroad. Each scholarship is up to $5,000 and nearly 3,000 scholarship are given to students each year.

ItaliaRail Scholarship

When in Rome, you take the train. That’s why Italy’s railway company, ItaliaRail, offers scholarships, plus a three-day rail pass to the selected applicants. Of course, you don’t have to just be studying abroad in Rome to qualify.
ItaliaRail’s Italy Scholarship is open to students enrolled in one of their university’s credit-granting programs in Italy, including Cal State Fullerton’s 2020 Fall Semester Florence Program. Twice a year, we give away a $500 scholarship to one lucky Go Overseas community member..

 

Rotary Foundation & Club Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation and regional clubs offer a variety of scholarship opportunities for students to study — and to study abroad. These include scholarships for high school and graduate students, and the amounts and eligibility vary by club. You do not necessarily need to be a Rotary member to qualify.

 

 The Marcus Joseph Debaise Scholarship

The Marcus Joseph Debaise Scholarship has been created to help one student defray the high cost of university tuition. Marcus believes that everyone who seeks high education should be able to do so. The Marcus Joseph Debaise Scholarship is the result of his commitment.
Guidelines:
The following requirements must be met to apply for the Marcus Joseph Debaise Scholarship.
  • High school senior currently accepted at an accredited college or university
  • Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior student currently enrolled at an accredited college or university.
  • Submit an essay of 700-800 words answering the following question.
  • What is your best solution for resolution of the student loan debt crisis?
The Marcus Joseph Debaise Scholarship will be awarded based upon a review of the submissions received by Mr. Debaise.
Amount:
This scholarship is a one-time award of $1000.00
Deadline:
  • The Deadline to apply for the Marcus Joseph Debaise Scholarship is August 1, 2020
  • The winner will be notified on August 15, 2020 via email
  • The winners name will be posted on the www.marcusjosephdebaisescholarship.com website.

The Rainbow Scholarship

Made Possible By: The generous support of a group of international education professionals who are committed to advocating on behalf of LGBTQI students. These professionals counsel international and study abroad LGBTQI students, support their LGBTQI colleagues in the field, and collaborate through groups created with the support of NAFSA and the Forum for Education Abroad.
Description: This scholarship will be awarded to deserving LGBTQI students who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. Study abroad programs must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in length to receive an FEA scholarship.

Patrick Henry Maddren Scholarship

Agnes E. Vaghi Scholarship

To be awarded to an outstanding female Italian American undergraduate student majoring in Italian, English, literature or journalism. This student must have a GPA of 3.5 (or the equivalent) or higher.
 

Emanuele Gianturco Memorial Scholarship

To be awarded to outstanding Italian American students (undergraduate and graduate). This student must a first-generation college student, demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of 3.5 (or the equivalent) or higher.

Filomena C. Peloro Scholarship

To be awarded to outstanding Italian American students (undergraduate and graduate). This student must demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of 3.5 (or the equivalent) or higher.

NIAF Jack Valenti Scholarship

To be awarded to an outstanding Italian American (undergraduate or graduate) student majoring in film or a related field. This student must have a GPA of 3.5 (or the equivalent) or higher.

The Ashley Soulé Conroy Foundation Scholarship

The Ashley Soulé Conroy Foundation (Ashley’s Foundation) has its roots in 2006, after the curious, young Ashley’s life was cut short just a month into her study abroad trip in India. Her family then set up this foundation to honor her life and Ashley’s love for travel. Ashley’s Foundation now grants scholarships to a few students from around the United States planning to study abroad. While students aiming to study abroad can choose any country to receive funding, this is definitely a great pick among study abroad in Italy scholarships!

Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education Abroad has awarded hundreds of students with well over a million dollars in funding to realize their dreams of studying abroad. While all eager participants are encouraged to apply, applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups, such as first generation, minority, or community college students are given preference. By submitting one online application, you’re entered into consideration for a ton of other affiliated scholarships, so you can increase your chances of saying ciao bella to some funds even more!

The National Italian American Foundation Scholarships

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) awards scholarships to 60-70 outstanding students in a variety of academic disciplines for use during the following academic year. Scholarships range from $2,500 – $12,000.
To be considered for a NIAF scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a member of NIAF or have a parent, grandparent or guardian with an active NIAF membership. Not a member? Visit our membership page to join or renew your membership today!
  • Be enrolled in a US accredited institution of higher education for the Fall 2020 semester.
  • Have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 (or the equivalent). Some scholarships require a lower GPA requirement for eligibility. Students that are a part of a pass-fail system are also eligible to apply.
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien.
  • For the purposes of the NIAF Scholarship Program, to be considered “Italian American,” the student must have at least one ancestor who has immigrated from Italy
Each scholarship award can only cover tuition and university-provided room and board. Scholarship recipients are eligible for one year of scholarship support and will be disbursed for the Fall 2020 semester. Scholarship monies not used during the fall 2020 or spring 2021 semester are not transferable to the following academic year. Scholarship applicants and winners can and are encouraged to reapply in subsequent years.

Ira Funds

Each year Dr. Fellow competes for IRA funds.  He has been successful in obtain at least $1,5oo per student for those who apply and are accepted into The Florence Programs.

Department of Communications Scholarships

  • The $2,500 Vikki Vargas/NBC 4 Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students in broadcast journalism. It requires two letters of recommendation and a personal statement demonstrating your interest or experience in broadcast journalism activities. Most Communications Department professors are happy to write letters of recommendation for talented students!
  • The $1,000 V.J. Lovero Photojournalism Scholarship is open to students who have demonstrated career promise as a photographer. It requires a portfolio of your 10 best images including sports and portrait photography.
  • The $1,000 Miven Venture Partners Scholarship is intended to support advertising students in financial need. It requires a project showing your talent in brand strategy, but it can be work you’ve completed for a class.
Please review the criteria and qualifications for these scholarships at communications.fullerton.edu/scholarships/ to make sure you meet all of the requirements. Please return your completed application to the department office in College Park 400. Deadlines are usually the first of March 1.

 College of Communication Scholarships

The Maxwell International Scholarship is available to Cal State Fullerton Communications majors who will study abroad in a university-sanctioned study abroad program. Usually $1,000 scholarships are available to College of Communication majors. Information may be obtained by consulting the University’s scholarship booklet and look under College of Communication.   Deadline: March 1.
Pell Grant Students who are U.S. citizens are eligible for the Benjamin Gilman $3,000 Scholarship that can be applied to the 2016 Florence Semester Program.  Deadline is March 2016.  Contact Ms. Charity Kuczynski, study abroad adviser, at ckucynski@fullerton.edu

Here are a few national scholarships available for study abroad students:

The Fund for Education Abroad envisions a future in which any U.S. student who dreams of studying abroad will be able to participate.  FEA encourages minority, community college, and first-general college students to apply.  Eligibility requirements include: U.S. citizen or permanent resident; currently enrolled as undergraduate at U.S.university or college; Minimum of 4 weeks in-country; study abroad program must take place in summer 2018, fall 2018, and/or spring 2019, and program must be eligible for academic credit. Funding awards up to $10,000.  Application requirements include: onlin appliation form; financial aid form (completed by financial aid office), and recommendation letter (from professor or advisor).  Applications opens Nov. 15, 2017 and closes Jan. 10, 2018. The Gilman Program diversifies the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions were they go by awarding more than 2,000 scholarship of up to $5,000.  It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens, receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term abroad, applying for an internship, and studying for a minimum of four weeks abroad.  Apply at www.iie.org/gilman  Contact the University study abroad office for more information. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students. See www.us.fulbrightonline.org Deadline is in October.
